THE THREE

SEO, AEO, GEO on one page

The buyer went from scrolling to asking. The discipline split three ways.
Same customer, three different rooms. SEO wins the room where they scroll results. AEO wins the room where one answer gets quoted. GEO wins the room where a machine recommends a handful of names. Here is the honest version of each.

02
WHICH ONE YOU NEED

Pick by where you are, not by acronym

The acronym you need is decided by your current hole, not by a trend.
“NOBODY FINDS US AT ALL”
You need SEO first. Foundation, service pages, schema. Nothing AI-shaped outranks a site the engines cannot read.
“WE RANK, BUT CHATGPT NEVER NAMES US”
You need the GEO layer: entity facts aligned, proof in quotable words, mentions where they are real.
“GOOGLE QUOTES OUR COMPETITOR, NOT US”
That is AEO: rebuild the answer pages so the question is answered in the first lines, marked up with schema.
“ALL THREE ARE FINE AND THE NUMBER IS FLAT”
Search is not your constraint. That is a strategy question, and it is what the free growth plan call is for.
Run the free AI visibility report at the bottom of this page before deciding. It shows which of the four rows you are in.

THE PUNCHLINE

One page can earn all three

One good page ranks, gets quoted, and gets cited.
Take the page a pool builder publishes for one question in one town: what an inground pool costs in that town, with honest ranges and real projects. Built well, that page ranks in Google for the search, gets quoted by the AI Overview, and gives the chat engines a clean, consistent fact to cite. Three acronyms, one page, one build.

Vendors who sell SEO, AEO, and GEO as three separate retainers are selling you the same page three times.

THE SOUP WARNING

How to not get robbed by the alphabet

New names, old products. Four tests clear the fog.
01

Same menu, new acronym

A 2024 SEO package with GEO on the invoice. The deliverables are identical and the price went up.
The testAsk what the GEO line adds, deliverable by deliverable. Silence is the answer.
02

The magic file

Someone sells you an llms.txt or a special robots entry as the fix. No file makes an engine recommend you.
The testAsk what the file changes about what the web says about you. It changes nothing.
03

Guaranteed placement

A promised position inside ChatGPT’s answers. The engines are not for sale and no vendor controls them.
The testAsk for the mechanism that makes the guarantee work. There is not one.

THE GLOSSARY

Every term on this page, in one line each

Open the glossary

AI Overview: The written answer Google places above its results, with links to the sources it drew from.

Generative engine: Any AI that writes an answer instead of listing links: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity.

Answer engine: A search mode that returns one direct answer: featured snippets, voice assistants, AI Overviews.

Entity: The thing the engines believe you are: your name, what you sell, where, and how you compare.

Schema: Machine-readable labels on a page that state what it is about, so engines never have to guess.

LLM: Large language model, the technology behind chatbots. It predicts answers from training data plus whatever it can read live.

Citation: A source an AI answer names or links. In GEO, being the cited source is the win.

AI visibility: Whether the engines name you when buyers ask questions in your category, measured by question over time.

llms.txt: A proposed file some sites publish for AI crawlers. Harmless to have, and not a ranking mechanism.

WHAT THIS COSTS, AND WHERE TO GO

The acronyms do not change the price

One build, from $5,000 a month. The acronym on the invoice is up to the vendor; the work is what you are buying.
Engagements start at $5,000 a month and most land between $5,000 and $15,000, quoted fixed on the call. Which page you enter on matters less than which hole you are in. The routes:

08
QUESTIONS

The questions owners ask before they spend

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO sits on the foundation SEO builds: the pages, the schema, the mentions. Google’s AI Overviews appear above the results SEO earns, and the chat engines read the same web. Weak SEO caps GEO. The clients losing in AI answers are losing in search first.

Which is better, SEO or GEO?

Wrong fight. They pay different rooms of the same house. If nobody finds you today, SEO is the foundation. If you rank and the machines still do not name you, GEO is the missing layer. Most established businesses need the second one, and the free report on this page shows which one you are.

Is AI SEO the same thing as AEO?

The names blur because vendors rename the work. AI SEO generally names the whole combined practice. AEO points at the quoted-answer layer: snippets, voice assistants, AI Overviews. GEO points at the chat models. Ask any vendor what the deliverables are, line by line, and the acronyms stop mattering.

What is AEO, in one sentence?

Answer engine optimization is the work of making your page the one clean answer an engine quotes: the question answered in the first lines, marked up with schema, on a page the engine trusts.

What is GEO, in one sentence?

Generative engine optimization is the work of making AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini name your business, describe it correctly, and cite it when buyers ask.

What is an AI Overview?

The written answer Google places above its results, assembled from sources it links. It reads the live web at the moment of the search, which is why page changes can move it within weeks.

Do I need all three?

You need all three jobs done, and one build does them together: answer pages per question and town, schema, consistent facts, and proof. What you do not need is three retainers from three vendors for the same pages.

How long does each one take?

SEO compounds over three to six months. AEO responds in weeks to months, because snippets and AI Overviews read the live web. GEO mentions on the trained models land in a two-to-four-month window, after the consistency accumulates.

What does the combined build cost?

At ROI.LIVE, engagements start at $5,000 a month and most land between $5,000 and $15,000, quoted fixed on the call. The acronym a vendor puts on the invoice should not change the price, and if it does, ask which deliverables the extra acronym bought.

How do I check where I stand today?

Run the free AI visibility report on this page. Then ask ChatGPT the three questions your buyers would ask, and note who gets named. Ten minutes, no spend, and the gap is obvious.

Why do agencies keep inventing new acronyms?

Because new names re-open closed deals. The work underneath has stable parts: answers, entity facts, proof, and mentions. Judge vendors on those four deliverables and the naming churn stops costing you money.

THE NEXT STEP

One build. Three payouts.
