THE LABELS

Part-time, fractional, interim, full-time

Confirm the work and contract behind the title.
Part-time and fractional CMO often describe the same commercial arrangement. An interim CMO covers a transition and may work part-time or full-time. An employee hired part-time can have different contractual and employment terms from a retained operator.

LineWhat to agree
Management fee$5,000–$15,000 a month is ROI.LIVE’s usual range. The proposal quotes the actual scope; revenue alone does not assign a tier.
Executive availabilityHours or reserved meeting and decision time, response expectations, leave cover and the named accountable operator.
Specialist deliveryNamed roles, included hours or quantities, revision rounds and acceptance criteria for the agreed work. This is not unlimited production.
Separate costsMedia billed to your platform account, software licenses and approved external shoots, photography, print or other outside production.
Change controlNew pages, channels or integrations need a written change with its fee and schedule before work proceeds.
Term and exitInitial term, renewal, cancellation notice, account ownership and handover are stated before payment.

Illustrative monthly budget: $10,000 in management plus $8,000 in media totals $18,000 before any separately agreed software or production. Compare the total cost and work included.

Illustrative equal-hour-cost calculation: assume a full-time executive costs $400,000 a year for 2,080 paid hours. At $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000 a month, the equal hourly cost occurs at 6, 12 and 18 hours a week, respectively. Formula: monthly fee × 12 × 2,080 ÷ $400,000 ÷ 52. This compares cost per paid hour, not profit or business value. A retainer containing specialist delivery cannot be treated as executive pay alone.
03
THE HIDDEN RISK

Can the operator cover the workload?

Client count is only one input. Calculate the committed hours.
Hours
CONFIRMED BEFORE SIGNING
Capacity is confirmed when the scope is agreed. Ask for committed executive hours, specialist hours, response expectations, cover during absence and the start date. A client count alone cannot establish whether someone has enough time.
Example: six clients at eight executive hours each require 48 hours before administration or leave. Six at four hours require 24. Neither count proves capacity without the underlying workload.
Ask how urgent decisions are handled between scheduled meetings and who covers absence. Confirm conflicts of interest and the start date in writing.
04
FIT

Who a part-time CMO fits

The right size for the seat matters more than the title on it.

Fits you if

  • You have evidence of demand and enough contribution margin to fund the full programme.
  • Marketing decisions need a senior owner with agreed authority.
  • Your team or a scoped delivery team can implement the work.
  • You can provide sales and cost records and make time for decisions.
  • The business can fulfil additional demand without damaging service or cash flow.

Does not fit if

  • The fee would consume the cash needed to deliver your existing orders.
  • You need a full-time executive for daily management or on-site work.
  • Your leadership is covered and the gap is a specific production task.
  • You want advice while retaining all decisions; a consulting engagement may fit.
  • You are still testing demand on a small budget; a bounded customer or offer test may be the better first purchase.
An agency relationship’s length and a public-company executive’s tenure are different measures. Request a relevant dated reference and ask what changed during that engagement.
05
QUESTIONS

Questions owners ask next

Is a part-time CMO the same as a fractional CMO?

The terms often describe part-time marketing leadership. A part-time employee and a retained fractional operator can have different legal and contractual arrangements. Check the actual agreement, decision authority and availability.

How many hours should we buy?

Capacity is confirmed when the scope is agreed. Ask for committed executive hours, specialist hours, response expectations, cover during absence and the start date. A client count alone cannot establish whether someone has enough time. Start from the decisions and team support required each week. No fixed client count or 5-to-20-hour band guarantees a fit.

How much does a part-time CMO cost?

ROI.LIVE engagements start at $5,000 a month, with most between $5,000 and $15,000. The written scope sets the fee, executive availability and specialist work. Media, software and approved outside production are separate.

When should we hire a full-time CMO instead?

Consider a full-time hire when daily leadership, team management, on-site work or investor responsibilities need a dedicated executive. Use an actual compensation package and your operational workload; there is no universal revenue cutoff.
