An AI-visibility percentage should help you decide what needs attention. Citation share shows how often your site appears as a source within a defined sample of AI answers. ROI.LIVE keeps it separate from mentions, recommendations, rankings and sales so the report tells you what happened without promising more than it measured.
Before celebrating “twenty percent visibility,” ask what the twenty percent counts. It could mean twenty out of one hundred answers cite the business, or twenty percent of all citation links point to it. Those are different results. You need the denominator to judge the change.
Define the observation before collecting it
One observation is one saved response to one query under recorded conditions. Keep the query, platform, mode, model when exposed, date, location, language and whether web retrieval was active. Record failed requests separately from completed answers that do not mention the business.
Keep a stable core of buyer questions and run them again because answers vary. Mark any new questions you add. If some questions carry more weight, publish the weights and the unweighted result too, so you can tell whether the change came from the answers or the way the report counted them.
Four measures to keep separate
Name the event before its percentage
| Measure | Numerator | Denominator |
|---|---|---|
| Mention coverage | Completed answers naming the business | All completed sampled answers |
| Citation coverage | Completed answers linking to a source owned by the business | All completed sampled answers |
| Citation share | Citation occurrences pointing to the business under a stated counting rule | All counted citation occurrences |
| Recommendation coverage | Completed answers recommending the business under a defined rule | All completed sampled answers |
Open the saved answer before assigning its label. It may cite your source without recommending your company, or name the brand without linking to it. Keep that response with the report so the person paying for the work can inspect the distinction.
A worked example
The same sample has two denominators
Read the full explanation
This sample is illustrative. Out of one hundred completed answers, thirty mention a company, twenty cite its site and twelve recommend it. Across all answers there are two hundred counted citation occurrences, of which twenty-five point to the company's site.
Mention coverage is 30%. Citation coverage is 20%. Recommendation coverage is 12%. Citation share is 12.5%, calculated as 25 ÷ 200. The twenty cited answers can contain twenty-five citations because some answers cite the site more than once under this counting rule.
Use your own inputs
Citation coverage and share calculator
Use one stable counting rule. Answers, citation occurrences and mentions are different units. This describes your sample, not the share of all buyers.
The figures describe the sample. They do not mean the business reaches the same share of every real buyer or receives that share of leads.
Keep the counting rule stable
Decide whether repeated links to the same page count once per answer or once per occurrence. Normalize domains and redirected URLs. Identify whether partner coverage counts as a mention of the business or a citation to a third-party publisher. Do not silently count both as citations to the business's own site.
Keep the raw answers with the summary table. If the counting rule changes, recalculate the earlier comparison where possible. If you cannot, mark the break in the series. That avoids asking the owner to fund “growth” that came from a different method.
Pair visibility with business evidence
Keep ordinary query rankings and search clicks because they still describe discovery routes. Record identifiable AI referrals, qualified enquiries and revenue with their attribution limits. A missing referrer can hide a source, and an AI mention cannot be connected to a specific sale without additional evidence.
Google's July 2026 guidance points owners to Search Console's generative AI reporting. Check the reports available in the actual property and use their definitions. Do not infer AI traffic by labeling every visit from google.com or bing.com as an AI referral.
Use the result to choose a repair
Read the questions where your business fits but is missing, described with the wrong facts or linked to the wrong page. Look for a repair you can name: a fact to correct, a service to explain or a source to add. One missing response alone does not establish a technical failure.
The AI Overviews comparison explains why a classic rank and an AI citation can differ. The zero-click measurement guide connects those observations to demand and conversion reporting. Start with a documented sample and one repair you can verify, then compare the same questions again.
Questions owners ask
Does citation share replace rankings?
No. It adds a view of a defined AI-answer sample. Keep rankings, clicks and business outcomes because they describe different parts of discovery and performance.
What is the difference between coverage and share?
Coverage counts answers that contain a qualifying citation divided by sampled answers. Share counts qualifying citations divided by all counted citations under a stated rule.
Is a brand mention a citation?
An unlinked mention is not a source citation. Record mentions, links and recommendations separately so the report does not overstate what occurred.
How many prompts are enough?
Choose a sample that represents the buyer questions being evaluated, repeat observations and report its size and limits. No universal count makes a sample representative of all buyers.
