If your rankings look steady but fewer people reach the site, the report leaves you with a decision to make. Traditional rankings show a page's position in the classic results list. An AI Overview can summarize the question and link to supporting sources. ROI.LIVE records both for the same buyer query because either view on its own can miss part of the search experience.
A page can rank without appearing as an AI source in that observation. The supporting sources can also differ from the familiar top results. Query, date, market and response all affect the overlap. Before moving budget, look at the searches your buyers use instead of applying one overlap percentage to the business.
Compare the actual search experience
Open a search your customer would make and save the query, country, language, device and date. Record whether an AI Overview appears. Keep classic organic results separate from ads, maps, shopping and other features, and note where each sits. An AI Overview does not always appear above every paid placement.
Google's AI-features documentation describes related-query retrieval and explains that responses and links can vary. A screenshot captures one observation, not a permanent arrangement for that query.
A comparison sheet
Record both search experiences
| Observation | Classic search | AI answer |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Organic page position under a defined counting rule | Mention, source citation or recommendation |
| Destination | The listed landing page | The exact cited page, which may differ |
| Context | Query and surrounding result features | Answer wording, source list and retrieval mode |
| Outcome | Clicks and subsequent actions | Visible placement plus any attributable visit or action |
Follow the citation to its destination. A third-party review may discuss your company while sending the click to the publisher's site. Record both the mention and the destination so you know whether the opportunity is recognition, a visit to your site or something else.

A click decline can feel urgent even when the ranking number has changed little. Before changing the plan, inspect demand, device mix, branded-query share and the results page itself. AI answers may contribute; seasonality, fewer searches or a different query mix can also explain the change.
Use matched query groups and equivalent date windows. Average position across a changing set of queries can move even when positions for the important individual queries remain stable. The zero-click measurement guide shows why a click decline is not the same as a count of buyers lost.
Keep the page useful for the click that does arrive
A visitor sent to a supporting article still needs a useful answer and a clear next step. Give the evidence on that page so the reader can understand it without starting elsewhere. Then offer a relevant route to the service when they are ready to act.
The guide to writing citable answers focuses on preserving the subject, units and limits in a passage. A special snippet style cannot compensate for an incorrect result or a page that fails on a phone.
Measure with the tools available to the property
Use Search Console's reports according to their current definitions, including generative AI reporting where available. The newer July 2026 guide describes that reporting. Older guidance groups AI features within Web search, so check the report exposed in the property rather than assuming every account has the same view.
In analytics, retain known referral sources without relabeling an entire search-engine domain as AI traffic. Follow qualified enquiries and sales through the customer system where the data allows it. Report missing attribution instead of forcing every sale into a channel.
Choose improvements from the evidence
Choose the repair that matches what you found. If the same buyer questions expose a factual gap or unclear service description, fix that page. If the description is accurate but suitable visitors do not take the next step, inspect the offer and conversion route. Those findings call for different work, even if both appear in the same visibility report.
Use the citation measurement method for repeatable AI observations. Keep the classic ranking series alongside it. The combined record helps an owner decide what to change without pretending that a single new metric explains the entire customer decision.
Questions owners ask
Does ranking first guarantee an AI Overview citation?
No. A classic position and an AI source selection are different observations, and the source set can vary by query and response.
Can every google.com visit be counted as an AI referral?
No. That domain also represents ordinary search and other activity. Use the reporting definitions and source evidence available to the property.
Does lower click-through rate prove AI caused the decline?
No. Inspect demand, query mix, device mix and other result features before assigning a cause.
Should a business stop tracking classic rankings?
No. Track them with AI mentions and citations, then connect both to qualified enquiries and sales where attribution supports it.
