MARKETING LEADERSHIP WITH DEFINED AUTHORITY
01
THE DEFINITION

What a fractional CMO is

Senior marketing leadership with part-time availability.
The company hires a fractional CMO to make and coordinate marketing decisions. Authority, executive time and implementation support depend on the agreement. The arrangement may support an existing team or include a separate delivery team. “Fractional” does not promise a particular number of hours or eliminate every employment or contractual consideration.

THE JOB

What a fractional CMO decides

Four recurring decisions sit within the role.
01
THE BUDGET

Where the money goes

The split across paid, search, email, and pages, decided by return rather than by habit.
02
THE OFFER

What you sell, and at what price

Review what the business sells, who it serves and how price relates to margin and demand. The owner retains authority over the business decisions agreed in the contract.
03
THE CHANNELS

Which engines get built

Choose the channels that fit the buyer, margin, budget and team capacity. There is no fixed number of channels every business should run.
04
THE NUMBER

What winning means

Agree a business outcome and baseline before work starts. Use supporting measures to understand changes; impressions can be a diagnostic but cannot substitute for sales or margin.
Write down decisions, owners and review dates so the team can act between meetings. Clear authority and implementation capacity make the part-time arrangement useful.

LineWhat to agree
Management fee$5,000–$15,000 a month is ROI.LIVE’s usual range. The proposal quotes the actual scope; revenue alone does not assign a tier.
Executive availabilityHours or reserved meeting and decision time, response expectations, leave cover and the named accountable operator.
Specialist deliveryNamed roles, included hours or quantities, revision rounds and acceptance criteria for the agreed work. This is not unlimited production.
Separate costsMedia billed to your platform account, software licenses and approved external shoots, photography, print or other outside production.
Change controlNew pages, channels or integrations need a written change with its fee and schedule before work proceeds.
Term and exitInitial term, renewal, cancellation notice, account ownership and handover are stated before payment.

Illustrative monthly budget: $10,000 in management plus $8,000 in media totals $18,000 before any separately agreed software or production. Compare the total cost and work included.

Illustrative equal-hour-cost calculation: assume a full-time executive costs $400,000 a year for 2,080 paid hours. At $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000 a month, the equal hourly cost occurs at 6, 12 and 18 hours a week, respectively. Formula: monthly fee × 12 × 2,080 ÷ $400,000 ÷ 52. This compares cost per paid hour, not profit or business value. A retainer containing specialist delivery cannot be treated as executive pay alone. See the full cost example.

Who should hire one, and who should not

I will tell you on the first call, not after the first invoice.

Hire a fractional CMO if

  • You have evidence of demand and enough contribution margin to fund the full programme.
  • Marketing decisions need a senior owner with agreed authority.
  • Your team or a scoped delivery team can implement the work.
  • You can provide sales and cost records and make time for decisions.
  • The business can fulfil additional demand without damaging service or cash flow.

Hire something else if

  • The fee would consume the cash needed to deliver your existing orders.
  • You need a full-time executive for daily management or on-site work.
  • Your leadership is covered and the gap is a specific production task.
  • You want advice while retaining all decisions; a consulting engagement may fit.
  • You are still testing demand on a small budget; a bounded customer or offer test may be the better first purchase.
A $2M revenue business can still be the wrong fit if margin, cash, authority or delivery capacity is missing. Compare the operating options before committing.

QUESTIONS

Questions owners ask next

What is a fractional CMO in one sentence?

A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader retained for part of the week to set priorities, guide the team and review performance under agreed decision authority.

How is a fractional CMO different from a consultant?

A fractional CMO usually has ongoing leadership responsibility; a consultant may focus on advice or a defined project. Either can implement work or be accountable for outcomes when the contract says so. Check the responsibilities rather than relying on the title.

Does a fractional CMO include an execution team?

Sometimes. ROI.LIVE scopes specialist delivery alongside leadership. Other arrangements use the client’s staff or a separate agency. The proposal must name the people, capacity and work included.

How much does a fractional CMO cost?

ROI.LIVE engagements start at $5,000 a month, with most between $5,000 and $15,000. The written scope sets the fee, executive availability and specialist work. Media, software and approved outside production are separate. The cost model explains a hypothetical full-time comparison without claiming a universal salary or break-even hour.

When is a fractional CMO the wrong hire?

When the business cannot afford the full programme, cannot implement the work, lacks proven demand at the planned budget, or needs daily executive coverage. Annual revenue alone is not a fit test.
